How is it possible that an aging oil pipeline that pumps 22 million gallons of oil every day is allowed to run through 20% of the world's fresh surface water? The pipeline is owned and operated by Enbridge, the same company that spilled 7.4 million gallons of oil since 1999, including a 1 million gallon oil spill into Michigan's Kalamazoo River in 2010. The pipe runs through the Straits of Mackinac, an iconic body of water located where Lake Michigan and Lake Huron meet. The Great Lakes are held in trust by the State of Michigan for its residents. Any kind of oil spill in these pristine waters would be unacceptable.
This spot is part of a new public information campaign mounted by a group of non-profits working together on clean water, climate change, and indiginous rights. Together, the groups are working to keep oil out of the Great Lakes.
It's shocking to think, that every day, 22 million gallons of oil flow through an aging pipeline the heart of the Great Lakes. The corporation that owns the pipeline at the Mackinac Straits caused the largest pipeline spill in US history. Their operation failed and dumped a million gallons of oil into the Kalamazoo River.
What if the pipeline ruptured here?
We must act now to keep oil out of the Great Lakes.
