White Widows portrays the tough and disadvantaged life of Indian cotton farmers in their village Dhanoli located in the region of Vidarbha, well known as the epicentre of farmer suicide.
Over past 20 years, due to serious distress in agriculture/rural India emerging from Environmental and Economic reasons, more than 300,000 farmers have committed suicide throughout India. Maharashtra has highest number of suicide by distressed farmers in India. From 2012 to April this year, a total of 3,145 farmers committed suicide in Vidarbha region. A recent analysis reveals just how deep despair runs in Vidarbha. In many cases, even a loan as small as Rs 10,000 was enough to push farmers over the edge to commit suicide.
