The American Dream Is a Dead Lawn

The lawn is a coddled myth; kept alive only by absurd amounts of water, fertilizers, pesticides, human labor, and enforced conformity. It is a reflection of one of humanity’s greatest misconceptions of the industrial era, that we can dominate nature, force it into a vision that suits us at the cost of non-human life. American colonizers treated nature as we treated the people that lived within it, as savage, wild, and unfit for civilization. The lawn symbolizes the erasure of all that lived here before: the culture, the knowledge, the tradition, the complex web of relationships that we arrogantly determined could be wiped clean with no consequence to ourselves.
