A Leftist's Guide to Debating the Far-Right

Watch enough political debates and you start noticing the same handful of tactics winning arguments regardless of who's actually right.

Harper O'Connor, drawing on a background in competitive debate, breaks down a Jubilee debate featuring Mehdi Hasan to map out what those tactics actually are and how to counter them.

The core skill is controlling the pivot: when an opponent starts losing ground, they tend to shift the goalposts rather than concede, and the fix is pressing them to explicitly acknowledge what they've already given up before letting the conversation move anywhere else.

Staying calm matters more than it seems. Personal attacks and inflammatory rhetoric usually signal that an argument is failing, and O'Connor argues that maintaining composure is itself a rhetorical advantage. Reading the room matters too. Calibration means recognizing whether an opponent is arguing in good faith or bad faith and adjusting accordingly, firm against someone acting in bad faith, genuinely conversational with someone who isn't.

Maybe the sharpest tool here is separating diagnosis from prescription. You can fully agree that a problem exists, like economic hardship, without conceding that your opponent's proposed fix, like anti-immigrant policy, has anything to do with actually solving it. - Films For Action
