The Internet Is Dying Faster Than We Thought (Here's How)

The first clickable banner ad appeared in 1994, courtesy of AT&T, and click-through rates started collapsing almost immediately. Art Chad traces the entire arc from there: banner blindness setting in within a couple years, advertisers responding by building increasingly invasive surveillance systems just to claw back attention, and Google's AdWords and AdSense creating a new economic engine that also gave birth to industrial-scale click fraud. Roughly a fifth of all click-based advertising today is estimated to be fraudulent, siphoning billions of dollars a year into a system built on numbers nobody can fully verify.

The video's sharpest historical example is the "pivot to video," when platforms like Facebook inflated engagement metrics, counting a three-second glance as a legitimate view, and convinced newsrooms across the industry to gut their writing staff and chase video instead. Those newsrooms trusted numbers that were essentially fabricated, and the layoffs that followed were real.

From there, the video reaches for something closer to a unifying theory: zero accelerationism, the idea that as any system scales, the cost of maintaining its own internal decay and fraud eventually outpaces whatever value it's producing, until the whole thing grinds toward stasis. As of mid-2026, bot and AI agent traffic has actually surpassed human traffic online, and AI-driven zero-click search is hollowing out the reason to serve a page at all. The impression-based ad model, the video argues, is in a death spiral. Its parting suggestion isn't a fix. It's a shrug toward the exits, encouraging people to spend less energy chasing a system that was rigged and rotting from the start, and more time in a physical life that can't be faked. - FFA
