Pennies Make Pounds

With a house that was starting to wear down and energy bills that were going up, Dawn McInnes recognized she and her two sons were living on the edge of fuel poverty.

Pennies make pounds reflects her determination to pursue every means possible to tackle the problem, including small changes in the entire family's daily behavior - not just to save energy or lower their energy bills, but because "it just makes sense." As a community youth worker, Dawn quickly saw the opportunity to teach other kids how to help their own families adopt new 'energy actions'.

Importantly, Dawn also accepted to participate in a scheme by offered by the Government of Wales to retrofit her home. Far from being 'hand-outs', such schemes are an increasingly important mechanism by which EU countries are meeting targets to boost energy efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions.
