Why Indigenous Fathers Are So Important | Thosh Collins

In this presentation, “The Evolving Role of Fathers in Indigenous Communities,” I explore how historical trauma from colonialism has disrupted traditional fatherhood, and offer a framework for Native men to heal and redefine their roles as fathers in 2025. Understanding the deep impacts of colonialism on family, health, and child-rearing is essential for men to reclaim their place in the community with renewed purpose and clarity.

To move forward, Indigenous fathers must actively engage in cultural evolution, adapting their practices to contemporary needs while preserving core values. Whether just starting fatherhood or seeking healing later in life, every man can begin this journey to strengthen Indigenous manhood for future generations.

From my lived experience, the vision of Indigenous Fatherhood encompasses three interlinked aspects: a lifelong mission guided by teachings demonstrated by actions of discipline and self-mastery. This also serves as the foundation for Indigenous manhood in general.
