Campism, the habit of picking sides in conflicts between rival empires under the banner of anti-imperialism, has become a powerful current on the left. Daniel Baryon of Anark argues it is a trap.
He traces its roots to the failures of authoritarian socialism. When vanguard parties couldn't deliver liberation, imperialism became the new villain, and backing the "lesser evil" state became a substitute for class struggle. That opportunism, he shows, mirrors the early path to fascism and feeds a red-brown pipeline where self-described leftists end up defending reactionary regimes.
The alternative he offers is a politics rooted in worker emancipation and the dismantling of oppressive state power, whichever flag it flies under.
