Vandana Shiva : Why We Must Respect & Support Our Organic Farmers

1

”An organic farmer is the best scientist of today, because they actually have to understand how nature works in order to produce. They are the best health specialist of today, because they are giving us the food that gives us health. An organic farmer is the best steward of the land and the best ecologist. And I am increasingly feeling that they are the best peacemaker of today because there is more violence, more death, more destruction, and more wars through a violent industrial agriculture system. And to shift away from that into an agriculture of peace is what organic farming is doing.”-Vandana Shiva

Footage shot at Phoenix Farm on Salt Spring Island while Over Grow The System was on the Sea To Seed Tour.

In the spring of 2014, a group of musicians, farmers, filmmakers, writers and photographers w set off on the Sea to Seed Tour, a month long sailing trip up through the Islands of British Columbia. On a experimental mission to collect and share the stories of the farming communities sown along the coast. While exploring the importance of localizing food systems, homesteading, organic farming, community building and permaculture, they also looked into the role that art and culture can play in supporting these ways, evolving educational forums and creating positive change.
