Self-Organisation Beyond Hierarchy

This series of six short films look beyond hierarchy at two approaches to self-organisation. Traditionally, many of us are used to having someone at the top, but times are changing and we are seeing a paradigm shift in how people organise. There are now needs and desires to work in different ways together, and people are starting to self-organise beyond hierarchy; but many of us don’t know how to do this.

Some people are working with a more collaborative approach, set of values and flatter structures, while others have a more dynamic, agile and evolutionary approach, while others just create a fuzzy mess! This series describes how these three approaches (hierarchy, collaborative and agile) look in six areas of organisational life.

Part 1: Introduction (2:46)

This introduces the three approaches to self-organisation which are described in more detail in the other episodes of this series.

Part 2: Creating Culture (12:30)

Each organisation has its own particular culture; its like a unique personality. Organisational culture is influenced by many things: values, power structures, personalities, assumptions, unspoken norms... And it has a massive influence on how effective an organisation can be. This episode explores how culture is created and worked with using a conventional hierarchy and then how it looks using two methods of self-organisation beyond hierarchy: more collaborative and agile approaches.

Part 3: Finding Fit (9:40)

Like a tropical fish fits perfectly into a coral reef, an organisation needs to fit into its environment to succeed. Many organisations fail because they are like a fish out of water and not in tune with what is being demanded from them by the world. This episode explores how organisations find how to fit well into their environments using a conventional hierarchy and then how it looks using two methods of self-organisation beyond hierarchy: more collaborative and agile approaches.

Part 4: Working With Power (11:49)

The way that power is structured and used has a massive impact on how an organisation works and how effective it can be. Who has authority for making certain decisions? Are decisions made by a leader, through a democratic vote, using consensus…? Is power concentrated, shared or distributed? These are some of the issues explored in this episode which looks at how this is done using a conventional hierarchy and then how it looks using two methods of self-organisation beyond hierarchy: more collaborative and agile approaches.

Part 5: Discovering Direction (11:21)

Deciding the purpose and direction of an organisation is crucial and is done in different ways in different types of organisations. Is purpose decided by the few at the top? Or is there widespread consultation which feeds into a democratic decision? Or does it emerge in response to tensions which are sensed from the environment and then rapidly and reliably processed into meaningful change? This episode explores how this is done using a conventional hierarchy and then how it looks using two methods of self-organisation beyond hierarchy: more collaborative and agile approaches.

Part 6: Getting Things Done Together (15:04)

This episode describes six areas of organisational life which need to be attended to for it to be healthy and successful, which are also the titles of the 6 episodes in this series: Creating Culture; Finding Fit; Working with Power; Discovering Direction; Getting Things Done Together; and Learning and Lasting. It explains how attending to all 6 areas create the conditions for collaboration to actually get the work done, both inside and outside of meetings. This episode explores how this is done using a conventional hierarchy and then how it looks using two methods of self-organisation beyond hierarchy: more collaborative and agile approaches.

Part 7: Learning and Lasting (10:55)

How we keep motivation alive and keep going when things get tough? And how we learn: from differences, diversity and a changing world; and adapt if needed? This needs to happen both at individual, and collective levels. Its hard enough to learn on your own, but how do we do it together? This episode explores how people and organisations learn and last using a conventional hierarchy and then how it looks using two methods of self-organisation beyond hierarchy: more collaborative and agile approaches.

Films For Action is a library for people who want to change the world.

 

Our mission is to provide citizens with the knowledge and perspectives essential to creating a more beautiful, just, sustainable, and democratic society.

Films For Action was founded in 2006 by a few friends in Lawrence, Kansas, after realizing how essential healthy media is to a healthy democracy.

Over the last 15 years, we've reviewed and curated over 1,000 free documentaries and 4,000 short films, plus over 150 pay-per-view documentaries, spanning 34 topics related to changing the world.

During this time we've been able to reach tens of millions of people - not by owning a TV network or spending truckloads of cash on advertising, but because millions of awesome people keep sharing 'films for action' with their friends on social media - in particular, our 850,000 supporters on Facebook and 70,000 site members. 

One of the coolest things is, thanks to our patrons, our library is ad-free and 100% supported by member donations, while 99% of our library is free to access and always will be. The pay-per-view films on our site, of course, help support the filmmakers, and 90-100% of the revenue for PPV films hosted by us goes to the filmmakers. 

To thank our $5/mo patrons, we partner with filmmakers and distributors to provide free access to a growing number of films that are normally pay-per-view. With just 20 highly curated films at the moment, it's basically a very, very tiny Netflix for world changers, but its main function is to support the library as a whole.
