Why Meritocracy Is a LIE (It's Way Worse Than People Realize)

I'm Andres Acevedo. In this short documentary, we'll explore the myths that uphold our social class system – the myths we use to justify inequality. Can you become anything in life or is the system rigged to make opportunities far from equal?

Do we live in anything near a meritocratic society?

I interview the journalist and author Petter Larsson about his book Rigged: How the belief in meritocracy lessens the chance of social mobility.

Together, we dismantle the myths surrounding social mobility, exposing the inconvenient truths hidden beneath. We explain Nepo Babies, The Great Gatsby Curve, The Paradox of Inequality, what the Norman invasion of England tells us about social mobility and what purpose rags-to-riches stories serve in today's society.

We also explore ground-breaking research done by Jonathan J.B. Mijs, Miles Corak, Gregory Clark and Neil Cummins and more.
