Local wisdom is something that has sadly lost it's way in our modern fast paced society. Where we live in Costa Rica is commonly referred to as the "campo", which would be roughly translated to the countryside. Small farms, community support, trade economy, knowledge sharing are all things that still exist in these little villages that have somehow been lost in time. The street we live on didn't even have electricity until 1995. I feel very fortunate to still be able to visit neighbors and receive local wisdom that has been passed down through generations of farmers. When we first arrived in Costa Rica 10 years ago, I was so excited to share all my "permaculture knowledge" I had learned from courses and books... with a little bit of real experience here and there. I have really come to appreciate the local ways and to realize many of these people have been doing "permaculture" before I was born and that they learned these techniques from their Grandfathers and Grandmothers. We are very fortunate to have this opportunity to make a video with one of the most amazing permaculturist I know. Francis has been working with us since we moved here and I have learned so much from him. We will continue to create videos on local hero's like Francis, and hopefully be able to support the continuation of the age old tradition of passing on wisdom from one generation to the next.
