Update: 70% of Maine residents in 2024 voted against a ballot measure that would have created the first statewide consumer-owned utility in the country. What did it cost to buy 70% of of Maine voters? $37.6 million. This is how much the opposition spent to defeat the measure, compared to the $1.16 million that was raised in support.
Despite this, residents in Maine continue to face skyrocketing electricity bills and frequent power outages, while the corporate utilities (CMP and Versant) that dominate the state brought in $187 million in profit in 2023. Both the companies are owned by foreign entities. Residents organized to put power back into democratic hands but were defeated once again by monied interests. This video details the proposal before the ballot was voted on and showcases what could have been. - Films For Action
