Deep Background 1: Qadaffi and the European Right

Is the characterization of Muammar Qadaffi as a power-hungry madman an oversimplification of a more complex ideological question?

For the last 30 years the Libyan government has enjoyed a close relationship with a radical right-wing philosophy first enunciated by the Baron Julius Evola, a little-known and enigmatic staple of Italian fascism. Evola, an engineer by trade and student of Eastern spiritual traditions by practice, sought to inspire a movement that would overcome capitalism and communism: 'the twin pillars of evil.'

This strange blend of spiritual and political ideology finally found roost in Libya in 1975 with the publication of Qadaffi's seminal "Green Book" and the recognition of Qadaffi as a fellow traveler by the radical right. The next forty years sees Qadaffi inseparably tangled with one European right-wing philosophy while a second, competing, rightist ideology, battled it behind the scenes. The truth is stranger than a Dan Brown novel.
