Be A Mentor (trailer)

“Be A Mentor” is a bilingual English/Spanish mentoring recruitment video short created by documentarian James E. Sanders, Jr. and Producer/Mentor Catherine Lee. It begins to explore the 10-year-old mentoring program at Beacon Hill Academy (BHA) in San Antonio, Texas. At BHA, students at-risk of failure to graduate are paired with mentors, caring adult volunteers who provide individualized attention these children do not receive at home. The mentoring relationship helps a child to improve self esteem and school performance, and encourages aspirations toward higher education. A thriving partnership between school staff and University Presbyterian Church has created a large, effective mentoring initiative that recruits volunteers both within and outside their religious community. BHA’s well-managed and successful program, the largest in the San Antonio Independent School District, can serve as a model best practice for other schools tasked with serving primarily low income Hispanic pre-K through 8th grade children. “Be A Mentor” serves as a trailer to solicit support for a full-length documentary in pre-production during the 2018-19 school year.
