A world where everybody has a gun, sorry smartphone*

As we see the endless loop of humans’ hate history repeat itself (again), we millennials are facing the most bizarre reality ever seen. As I scroll down on Facebook I can see a quick video of how to make a fine dinner for one right above a confession video from a Syrian refugee. I see a fail army video followed by a racist speech from Donald Trump, above an article about how rhinos are officially extinct. An add appears for the new season of the Kardashians reality show and suddenly, a Hiroshima oil spill image reminder. This contrast, this quantity of information delivered in the time that takes a finger to scroll down is making this generation resistant to reality. We are losing a human connection to realizing that every comment, every sharing, every group of society that we exclude, bully and reject is an actual life. We are so concerned about the inhumanity of the bombing by drones, that we don´t realize we´ve been having this individual power since smartphones appeared. For some reason, we have separated the virtual reality from our daily life which is a lie. This illusion has made us have 2 identities now, 1 inside the computer and 1 outside. Our values are now trendy and we forget about them as soon as they become complicated or not soothing to the new hashtag. The fact of having a personal Time Square numbs us with a false sense of community which makes us insecure, anxious and therefore dangerous. We feel safer to be aggressive and violent from the other side of the screen and of course, it makes sense, that is the same logic used in drones.

To speak your mind in real life has become a dare so we have chosen to have 2 moralities and it is starting to show: Brexit, Donald Trump. Quietly we are watching the world work itself towards division, racism, and intolerance (again), and this is because we are confused. THERE IS A LOT going on. And knowing all this, but not been really aware, neither fully understand the complexity of the problems makes us feel confused and redirect this into blaming everybody else but us; and consequently, try and go back to simpler terms where you could point out who is wrong and who is right. It is like going back with your ex when you tried new people and didn’t found love right away. Like going back to live with your parents when you realized how grey life really is. But the thing is, it is grey, it is complex and it is highly overwhelming. It is realizing that everything is connected, and what you do has consequences and that you are playing in a system with already set rules that focuses only on the benefit of a few. This system does suck, but to go back? It’s not even the easy way, is just an impulsive action from our deeply lonely side.

The cold-blooded solution is to accept reality and do something about it from inside the system in a job that you feel passionate about- and while this is true, we also have to start working with our humanity and awareness because to survive this world is an everyday challenge. We can’t continue doing so in a way as superficial as a screen. To know ourselves takes a lifetime, but to condemn others lives because our confusion and anxiety it's just not fair. Working from the inside out is harder because then you have to deal with yourself. This is something the millennial generation knows nothing about because we understand identity as a mood board set on a social platform, but it is exactly what we need. To be conscious of where our fear comes from, why, and redirect it towards positive action. Understand the power of information, what it means, and ultimately ask ourselves if we really wish to support hate. As always, the problem is not the drone itself, but the mind been able to sleep after clicking that button. Ignorance is happiness- true. But what about the happiness of the ones you´re ignoring?
