Schooling the World (2010)

If you wanted to change an ancient culture in a generation, how would you do it? You would change the way it educates its children.

The U.S. Government knew this in the 19th century when it forced Native American children into government boarding schools. Today, volunteers build schools in traditional societies around the world, convinced that school is the only way to a 'better' life for indigenous children. But is this true? What really happens when we replace a traditional culture's way of learning and understanding the world with our own? SCHOOLING THE WORLD takes a challenging, sometimes funny, ultimately deeply disturbing look at the effects of modern education on the world's last sustainable indigenous cultures.

Why Is This Film Free? - A Note from Films For Action

The film-maker, Carol Black, who created Schooling The World has generously made their film available to us in the spirit of the Gift.

Let's show the film-maker that the gift economy can work!

Support the film via PayPal. You can also visit the store to buy the DVD or a digital download (sliding scale - $5 - $25)

Our Story

Films For Action was founded in 2006 by a few friends in Lawrence, Kansas, after realizing how essential healthy media is to a healthy democracy. (Fun fact: This insight came from watching The Corporation!)

Over the last 18 years, we've curated over 1,000 free documentaries5,000 videos, and 4,000 articles spanning almost every topic related to changing the world.

During this time we've been able to reach over 100 million people - not by owning a TV network or spending truckloads of cash on advertising, but because millions of awesome people keep sharing 'films for action' with their friends on social media - in particular, our 800,000 supporters on Facebook

One of the best things is, our library is 99% free, ad-free, and 100% supported by our patron supporters. We don't accept any government or corporate funding.

To thank our $5/mo patron subscribers, we partner with filmmakers to provide access to over 50 patron-exclusive documentaries. Slowly curated over the last 6 years, we're proud of the paradigm-shifting knowledge the collection now contains.
