On a hot June day in 1990, local citizens joined hands in the countryside near Oxford, NC to block state officials from testing the soil in the hope of building a hazardous waste incinerator there. When informed of the state's plans which had infuriated the local citizenry, in stepped local attorney John Pike and his wife Priscilla to buy the property. Pike then sold five-dollar shares for 'Jonesland', named for the family that owned the land, with the end result hoping it would thwart the state's efforts to condemn the land and build the incinerator. Sales took off with locals flooding Pike's office wanting to buy shares, and in the process, garnering national attention and selling shares around the world. Well, it worked, and a few years later in 2004, the land was transformed into a county park. This is the story of its origins and the behind the scenes look at the major players that were responsible for Granville Athletic Park at Jonesland Environmental Preserve.
