The Beginning of the End?

The Beginning of the End?

I wrote these words about challenging Domination nine years ago (Engines of Domination, p. 230):
“The future is in the hands of the people of the world. No one can anticipate what events and ideas will motivate people to take action, or what actions they will take. Only great and inspired actions, driven by urgent necessity, are likely to have any profound effects, and as little as we can anticipate these actions, we can no better anticipate the responses of those in power. What lies ahead is the final drama of Civilization. We can only dimly foresee the field of action, or what will take place there. And the outcome is yet to be determined.”
Today, watching the Trump regime take control of history’s most powerful engine of domination, and watching an unprecedented one percent of the US population fill the streets in protest on that regime’s first full day in power, I think the final drama has begun, and the field of action has become apparent. Trump and his cohorts are laying bare the innate cruelty and greed of political power in a uniquely repugnant way, and their exploits may provoke a surge of resistance that bursts into worldwide uprisings against similar fascist regimes. This may be the beginning of the end—either the end of civilization and even humankind, or possibly the end of Domination. The necessities have never been more urgent. The time has come for great and inspired actions.
