How Did a Bunch of Teens Take Down Nepal’s Government?

Nepal has emerged as the blueprint for Gen Z activism worldwide. While covering youth movements, AJ+’s Anna Kook noticed that from Madagascar to Indonesia, organizers are looking to Nepal for inspiration on how to use social platforms to challenge power and mobilize their generation.

When the Nepali government banned social media platforms, Gen Z turned to Discord and TikTok to expose nepo babies and rally protesters. At the heart of it was 18-year-old Shaswot Lamichhane, a recent high school graduate who initially had no interest in political activism. He helped run the Discord server that led discussions and online polling to set up Nepal’s current interim government.
