Using wikis and digital fabrication tools, TED Fellow Marcin Jakubowski is open-sourcing the blueprints for 50 farm machines, allowing anyone to build their own tractor or harvester from scratch. And that's only the first step in a project to write an instruction set for an entire self-sustaining village (starting cost: $10,000).

A series of BBC films about how humans have been colonised by the machines we have built. Although we don't realise it, the way we see everything in the world today is through the eyes of the computers. The series argues this has affected a wide spectrum of human institutions and studies, from American economic theory, to environmental policy, and governmental philosophy. Filmmaker Adam...
Although many films have convincingly succeeded in drawing public attention to the issue of global warming, they have repeatedly ignored one of the most important causes of climate change, namely: intensive livestock production. Meat the Truth has drawn attention to this by demonstrating that livestock farming generates more greenhouse gas emissions worldwide than all cars, lorries, trains...
Humanity is sitting on a ticking time bomb. If the vast majority of the world's scientists are right, we have just ten years to avert a major catastrophe that could send our entire planet into a tail-spin of epic destruction involving extreme weather, floods, droughts, epidemics and killer heat waves beyond anything we have ever experienced. If that sounds like a recipe for serious...

Filmmaker Kristin Canty’s quest to find healthy...

He proposes a unique solution to this problem -- the Transition response, where we prepare ourselves for life without oil and sacrifice our luxuries to build systems and communities that are completely independent of fossil fuels. This talk was recorded in November 2009. TEDTalks is a daily video podcast of the...
In this, the first of his 58 documentary films, John Pilger combines candid interviews and amazing frontline footage of Vietnam to portray a growing rift between the US military bureaucrats - "lifers" - and the soldiers who physically and mentally fight the war on the ground, the "grunts". By 1970, it is an internal sense of disillusionment and frustration born from this rift that is...
By tradition, it’s called “the farm bill.” To EWG it ought to be the “food bill.” And instead of spending billions of your dollars in ways that harm water quality and wildlife, it should invest in protecting those resources. A “food bill” would tackle some of the damage that industrial food and agriculture takes on America’s health. Instead of...
Judy Wicks’ love of place has made widening ripples on a global scale. She’s the founder of BALLE (Business Alliance for Local Living Economies), a national network of sustainable, small businesses. After moving onto a quaint street in Philadelphia, she learned it was slated to be torn down. Organizing her community, she saved the block as a walkable community. Learn more at http://earthjustice.org/soot Tom Frantz has lived his whole life in California's Central Valley, where the small farms of his boyhood have given way to modern day mega-farms. The pollution from the farms combines with the area's other industries - oil, waste disposal, and trucking - to form some of the worst air pollution in America. It should come as no surprise that the area...
