Supporting local farms is one of the best and easiest ways to eat healthy, reduce your carbon footprint, and strengthen your community.

7 Reasons to Eat Locally

1) Helps the Local Economy:  According to a study by the New Economics Foundation in London, a dollar spent locally generates twice as much income for the local economy.  When businesses are not owned locally, money leaves the community at every transaction.

2) Reduces Air Pollution Better than Organic:  In a March 2005 study by the journal Food Policy, it was found that the miles that organic food often travels to our plate creates environmental damage that outweighs the benefit of buying organic.

3) Better Nutrition:  When you buy local foods produced on a small scale, what you see is what you get.  Instead of a long list of additives, preservatives, steroids, and other chemicals, locally produced food very rarely includes ingredients processed in a lab. In addition, local produce is fresher.  Because nutritional value declines as time passes after harvest, the fresher, local produce tends to have higher nutritional value.

4) Helps Fight Large Scale Contaminations:  Recent food-borne-illnesses like E. coli are less likely to happen on smaller scale farms.  On the other hand, food that spends large amounts of time in transit, changes hands multiple times, and is processed in huge batches provides more opportunities for contamination.

5) Energy Conservation:  Buying locally grown organic foods decreases dependence on petroleum, a non- renewable energy source. One fifth of all petroleum now used in the United States is used in Agriculture.  Buying from local producers also conserves additional energy at the distribution level.

6) Taste:  Fresher = Tastier.  Try it for yourself.

7) Reduce Animal Cruelty:  Small, local farms don't produce the inhumane conditions caused by factory farms

We can no longer stomach our food system. It's killing more and more Americans and costing billions in healthcare. 78% of Americans eat organic food, because they think it's healthier. But is organic really better for us or just a marketing scam? When corporations went into the business and "organic" became a brand, everything changed. The philosophy and the label grew...
If we can make radical changes in how we think about our relationship to nature and economic growth, we will see restored, vibrant ecosystems and healthy, prosperous farmers, cows, consumers, employees, investors and future children. So says the iconic food entrepreneur Gary Hirshberg, CEO of Stonyfield Farm, the world's largest organic yogurt company that he helped start 27 years ago. In...
By tradition, it’s called “the farm bill.” To EWG it ought to be the “food bill.” And instead of spending billions of your dollars in ways that harm water quality and wildlife, it should invest in protecting those resources. A “food bill” would tackle some of the damage that industrial food and agriculture takes on America’s health. Instead of...

Drawing from ancient knowledge and cutting edge science, Symphony of the Soil is an artistic exploration of the miraculous substance soil. By understanding the elaborate relationships and mutuality between soil, water, the atmosphere, plants and animals, we come to appreciate the complex and dynamic nature of this precious resource. In 2008, the world’s food system began to fall apart. However, threatened with hunger, rich countries have started buying up and leasing fertile tracts of the developing world. With 60% of all arable land in the world in Africa, this is where investors have firmly set their sights. In Mali, 75% of the population are farmers, but rich, land-hungry nations like China and Saudi...
When we walk into a supermarket, we assume that we have the widest possible choice of healthy foods. But in fact, over the course of the 20th century, our food system was co-opted by corporate forces whose interests do not lie in providing the public with fresh, healthy, sustainably-produced food. Fortunately for America, an alternative emerged from the counter-culture of California in the...
A weekly free bike coop where you can use mechanics’ tools and expertise to fix your bike? Free clinics where schoolkids or neighbors learn to maintain or build their own bikes from used parts?
