Films For Action Phoenixville screens The Corporation

By Carol Kuniholm / filmsforaction.org

Occupy Phoenixville/Films For Action will kick off its documentary film series on January 21, 2012 by s...howing “The Corporation” at 6 pm at the Schuylkill Friends Meetinghouse located at 37 North Whitehorse Road, Phoenixville, PA. A $5 donation per person is encouraged which will go toward the expenses of offering the film to the public.

Provoking, witty, stylish and sweepingly informative, The CORPORATION explores the nature and spectacular rise of the dominant institution of our time. Part film and part movement, The Corporation has transformed audiences and dazzled critics with its insightful and compelling analysis. Taking its status as a legal "person" to the logical conclusion, the film puts the corporation on the psychiatrist's couch to ask "What kind of person is it?

At the conclusion of the 2 hour and 24 minute movie, Occupy Phoenixville members will lead small group discussions about the rights and responsibilities of corporations and the ways that corporate interests challenge the rights of individuals. For Occupy Phoenixville, this question is at the heart of the recent appeal by Chester County Outdoor, LLC, to construct three large digital billboards on Nutt Road, despite citizens’ objections. The rights of corporations over people is also a dynamic factor in the discussion about fracking, as the shale gas industry has pushed its agenda at the expense of citizen health and the rights of home owners, small farmers, and local municipalities.

Participants are encouraged to bring non-alcoholic beverages, snacks or desserts to share during the film and discussion period. Parking is available at Schuylkill Friends Meetinghouse and along North Whitehorse Road during the film screening.
