On Saturday, November 24, 112 Bangladeshi garment workers lost their lives in a factory sewing Walmart clothing. Walmart bears the responsibility for the horrific deathtrap at the Tazreen factory where workers choked by smoke found locked exit doors, blocked stairwells, and fire extinguishers that didn't work.  Victims were trapped or jumped to their deaths from the nine-story building, which had no emergency exits.

Efforts by Walmart to distance itself from this tragedy by claiming that the factory was supplying Walmart through subcontractors without its permission or knowledge are unacceptable. As the most significant customer of these factories, Walmart has the market power to set safety standards.

Walmart’s culture of disrespect for workers here in the US reached its tragic conclusion in Bangladesh. The Walmart business model employs hundreds of thousands of workers through contractors and subcontractors who are forced by Walmart to shave pennies to operate in hazardous conditions. Workers and consumers here in the US reject Walmart’s business model that recreates the worst abuses of the past to exploit the most vulnerable workers both in Bangladesh and here in the US.
