We Stand with Tamir: Indy Candlelight Vigil #shedlight

Sun, Feb 22, 2015 5:30pm
Monument Circle - 1 Monument Cir Indianapolis, IN

Candlelight vigils are seen as a nonviolent way to raise awareness about a cause and to motivate change. Tamir was a 12-year old boy shot and killed in Cleveland, OH on November 22, 2014 while playing with an Airsoft replica gun at a park across the street from his home. When two police officers arrived at the scene after being dispatched by 911, he was fatally shot within seconds of their arrival. Tamir did not receive first aid for at least 4-minutes until an FBI agent unrelated to the initial 911 call showed up. His 14-year old sister who had been at the park with him was handcuffed and placed in the back of a squad car when she attempted to rush to her dying brother's side. When their mother arrived she had to choose between accompanying Tamir to the hospital or staying with her detained daughter. While Tamir's death received some national attention the case remains open and many citizens are not aware of the circumstances surrounding his death. Many have become desensitized to deaths of unarmed, innocent individuals and apathetic to injustice. Many have blamed Tamir for his own untimely demise which was ruled a homicide by the medical examiner. Let's #ReclaimHumanity: On February 22, 2015, exactly 3 months after Tamir was shot, we will hold a national vigil. We ask that you help bring awareness to this epidemic. It is important to keep pushing for justice in Tamir's case. Unjust rulings have been made on the cases of little 7 year old Aiyana Stanley-Jones, shot in the head by a police officer while she was sleeping and 14 year old Andy Lopez, who was also shot by police for carrying a toy gun. His case failed to get national attention. We mourn the loss of these children and we ask for the nation to come together - White, Black, Latino, Asian, Native American etc, and take a stand. Let's unite as one to light a candle and light up the Circle for Tamir and the many other #stolenchildren who have faced such a tragic end. We stand with Tamir and the countless others lost.
