What do beer cans, car tires and water bottles have in common? Not much unless you're renegade architect Michael Reynolds, in which case they are tools of choice for producing thermal mass and energy-independent housing. For 30 years New Mexico-based Reynolds and his green disciples have devoted their time to advancing the art of "Earthship Biotecture" by building self-sufficient, off-the-grid communities where design and function converge in eco-harmony. However, these experimental structures that defy state standards create conflict between Reynolds and the authorities, who are backed by big business. Frustrated by antiquated legislation, Reynolds lobbies for the right to create a sustainable living test site. While politicians hum and ha, Mother Nature strikes, leaving communities devastated by tsunamis and hurricanes. Reynolds and his crew seize the opportunity to lend their pioneering skills to those who need it most. Shot over three years and in four countries, Garbage Warrior is a timely portrait of a determined visionary, a hero of the 21st century.

Earthship n. 1. passive solar home made of natural and recycled materials 2. thermal mass construction for temperature stabilization. 3. renewable energy & integrated water systems make the Earthship an off-grid home with little to no utility bills.

Biotecture n. 1. the profession of designing buildings and environments with consideration for their sustainability. 2. A combination of biology and architecture.

The exurban locations of all of these buildings would seem to be a problem. The fact that so many of the interviews are conducted while Reynolds drives around in his F-150 seems to be an unintended irony of the vision and his projects.

I don't know if I'd say it's ironic. Obviously if there were electric vehicles that could also do the heavy loading that's required by his work I'm sure he'd have one. But there's nothing like this that exists yet. You have to work with what you've got.

I'm betting that as awareness of Earthship's grow, we'll see them adapted and integrated into city and country environments.

I can't watch this film past the first five minutes before it stops buffering. I've noticed this problem with other films from YouKU. Anyone else having these issues?

I thought it was ironic too, but his truck actually runs on biofuels.

It still doesn't work for me. :(

the credits in the end of the movie i downloaded, states that "80% of the trucks featured in this film were powered with used cooking oil."

to bad the video stops working , but ....

i bought his book some years ago and found diamonds it ! Now his homes are to expensive really for the average young working person to dream of . People making 8 bucks an hour more or less should have a path to freedom also , while doing a grind at at toco bell or where ever , saving money within levels of reality for them and thier inner poverty level .
I do not have an F150 but i have a 10 year old kia with a trailer hitch and a 200 buck trailer , instant pick truck . Real down sizing of electric use into plug and play 45 watt systems find them on special for 169.00 , outa pocket ideas and solutions .

and then the same MUD but no tires , for tires now have value in the world , solid poured adobe within a to code concrete colums on 8 , tie beam and and footer and those great big walls of glass are PRICEY ! , well pop can heaters recycled free glass and under slab radiation can be almost as good . He is not as important as much as his message i support that . ( the realestate collapse prevented the sale of my waterfron home in florida to build my example , but it is on the web and the tests surround me on my own property and almost electric off grid in town outa pocket surrounded by permaculture )

NOW THINK FOR YOURSELF . ( instinctualism.org again ideas are diamonds if you wanted to dig them out of that whihc you find dis taste full )
