What Obama Is Up Against

Dear Mr. Baker,

You seem to obviate Obama of any sense of agency, either in his appointments or in the advice he receives from his appointments. If his appointees provide advice that doesn't conform with reality, I would expect Obama to at the very least not listen, or at the most to release them from their duties. The truth is, Obama just gave a speech in Oslo that George W Bush could have given, except that Obama added a caveat similar to, 'Well, we'd rather not be in this war, but you remember Hitler, so we have to press on, because, you know, freedom isn't free.' I am really uninterested in the moral ambiguities that intrigue the halls of the White House. I am far more interested in seeing precisely how much of humanity and the natural world we can save from the processes of destruction that everyone seems to think are inexorably linked to modern civilization. Obama could easily set standards for restoring the environment and create jobs doing it. But it would not be profitable. He could create an open source research center for developing the best large and small scale batteries on the planet, but again it would not be profitable. He could hand out a shovel on every street corner and seed to every family, but again, it would not be profitable. I bring these points up, because at the end of the day, really, what is security? Is it the ability to ensure that people can eat? Is it the ability to make sure there is fresh drinking water? Or is it so that we can defend the idea of democracy, which currently means voting for a candidate who will bring 'change', and:

. uses the promise of peace to continue fighting 2 wars, while beginning a third.
. says that he will close an indefinite detention facility, only one of many, and doesn't.
. says that he will work to end mountaintop coal removal and move America to a 'green energy economy' and doesn't.
. does nothing to alter the financial rules for investment, either with laws or ability to enforce, that caused the US to 'have' to spend 700 billion dollars, at a time when 26% of American children are growing up in poverty.
. continues to engage in extraordinary rendition.

at a point when the environment is at or near or past irreparable damage, with the loss of the topsoil, the poisoning of the oceans, the depletion of aquifers and the destruction of original habitat in the US and other countries, wouldn't it make more sense to invest at least as rigorously in the natural systems that sustain life on the planet than those that bully other persons into submission? If not, what exactly are we fighting for? The ability for Obama to be conflicted, or his ability to delay real change?
