For many years a growing number of people have become disillusioned, or have completely rejected the traditional story of religion. At the same time, for many years a growing number of writers and a growing body of science has been confirming the ancient spiritual understanding that 'we are all one' – that the entire cosmos is one interconnected and indivisible whole. But despite these two concurrent developments, few seem to have put two and two together. So let’s try and do that right now:
Science now confirms that the entire universe, with its hundreds of billions of galaxies, each with hundreds of billions of stars, is One inextricably interconnected, and indivisible Whole. The fields of quantum entanglement, string theory, noetics, and cosmology, amongst others, tell us that we are literally all connected – that there is no separation between you, me, or any other ‘part’ of creation – including that ‘part’ we have called God. In fact science tells us that in Ultimate Reality there are no parts – there is no “other,” and that the uniquely human trait of experiencing oneself as an isolated being, separate in any way from the rest of creation, is what Einstein referred to as a ‘delusion of consciousness,’ and the root cause of all conflict and violence in the world.
So what? So, in realising that you are literally All That Is, what becomes profoundly apparent, is that You are literally infinite, You are literally eternal, You are literally God, and You are literally Me:
You are infinite – You are everyplace and everywhere. There is nowhere in the unimaginable vastness of the cosmos (or beyond the cosmos) that You are not.
You are eternal – You have always been, and You always will be. Before and during the 14 billion year history of the universe, during and after the unimaginably vast future of the universe. You will never end.
You are God – if there is a concept of God that can either be proved or disproved then that concept is not God. God is the sum reality of all that is – whatever that is – and therefore the only reality. That reality is incontestable. Being one with all there is You are not a part of that reality - that reality is You!
You are Me – as You are quite literally one with all that is, You are quite literally every ‘other’ person, every ‘other’ being, and every ‘other’ physical object on the living earth and beyond. In realising this truth you realise that everything you do to ‘another’ you do to Yourself.
This is an incredibly profound and transformative message. It is so counter to the story modern society and mainstream religion tells us, and so contrasting to the inner experience of most individuals. But it is the story that has been told by Indigenous cultures, enlightened masters, prophets, sages, and mystics throughout human history. It the story told by those around whom modern religions emerged in the first place. And it is the unifying, all-but forgotten truth that still lies at the heart of every religion and spiritual tradition today. What is most telling and exciting today however, is that as these truths are now being confirmed by the most revered religion of our day – that of science – we are now rediscovering these ancient truths that quite literally unite us all.
This new cosmological story, which echoes ancient spiritual truths, can provide a spirituality that all people might engage with. As a secondary school teacher, and having worked in various ministry roles within schools, I have seen just how predominant the notion is today of individuals who are ‘spiritual but not religious.’ Young people today know they are connected to something greater than themselves, but are crying out for a story about life, the universe, and God that they can relate to – one that is aligned with modern science and consciousness. I truly believe this is that story.
As a teacher of Science and of Study of Religion, I have never seen any conflict between science and spirituality. In fact, I have found modern cosmology, quantum mechanics, and various other fields telling The New Story of Cosmology to create a world filled with even greater wonderment and awe than even our distant ancestors could have imagined. Rather than deadening God and the universe, I believe modern science confirms an infinite, eternal, and divine cosmos of which we are all One.
