Technocalyps is a three-part documentary series on the notion of transhumanism by Belgian visual artist and filmmaker Frank Theys. The accelerating advances in genetics, brain research, artificial intelligence, bionics and nanotechnology seem to converge to one goal: to overcome human limits and create higher forms of intelligent life and to create transhuman life. Frank Theys conducts his enquiry into the scientific, ethical and metaphysical dimensions of these technological developments. The film includes interviews by top scientists and thinkers on the subject worldwide, including Marvin Minsky, Ray Kurzweil, Hans Moravec, Terence McKenna, Bruce Sterling, Robert Anton Wilson, Margaret Wertheim, Rael, the Dalai Lama and many more.

Really interesting film. However, I cringe at the thought of this being someone's introduction to the subject of transhumanism.
This film was heavily favored on the side of transhumanists. I would even go as far to say that it is a transhumanist propaganda film.
There are many sides to the philosophical debate of transhumanism. I think this will prove to be the most important debate in human history.

They say they will be able to put a human mind, only requiring 600Mb (CD-R) of space by 2025. Transferring the human mind to a computer.
"To liberate us from our old body that is becoming obsolete in this technological world. We would then go on living as free spirits in cyber space." We would then become, "Machines with human minds"

Really? What about the work of Dr. Bruce Goldberg's work on Epigentics? Your cells are transmitting and have cellular memory, this in essence makes up the human mind. The mind is NOT, just the areas in the brain that their tools can measure. Intelligent scientists know that their observations in the scientific method are limited by their tools & instruments ability to measure, or even the scientist's mental framework for "SEEing" what they are observing. Both limitations are starting to be surpassed.

The human mind is the body-mind and/or mind-body. Not just neurons firing in the brain. What about Dr. Melvin Morse's work on neurogenesis? Your thoughts grow brain cells and BODY cells deep in the hippocampus. These cells TRAVEL through the body. In fact, many neuroscientists are now referring to the brain as the BRAIN BODY.

Try again transhumanists.

My point in all of the above is to say that what science is discovering about the nature of the human mind and BODY is MORE promising. Why don't we use technology to better the human condition? To learn more about what we know very little about?

For example, the work they were doing with rat neurons with the dye could be used to see what the effects of super foods like Spirunlina have on the brain. This is a crude example, but a more detailed one would require WAY more elaboration.

The MAIN POINT is, the human body is ALREADY a technological enigma that we are just beginning to unwrap and discover with the advancements in science and technology AND the advancements in the human mind's ability to perceive what they see.

I encourage everyone to do their own research on the imperative issue of transhumanism.

does the film interview any primitivists?

Response to Dave Miller
I don't think so, but it argues against a techno future in its own way.
