Police Terrorism on a Rise!

By omer / filmsforaction.org

Streets of Model Town, Lahore portray the image of a civil-war struck city as heavy clashes between the Police and workers & supporters of Pakistan Awami Tehreek erupt after three days of the siege led by Police to restrict Dr. Allama Tahir Ul Qadri to his residence and efforts to stop gatherings in the surrounding areas.

Dr. Tahir, a religious and political scholar who vowed to over-throw the government just after a year of its formation, has been one of the top critics of the PML-N government led by Nawaz Sharif. The return of Dr. Tahir from Canada with intentions to topple the government, was dealt with solid hands as the Police attacked his residence in the middle of the night, killing 14 and injuring more than 60, including women and children. Amidst the “Freedom March” organized by the country's second largest political party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, led by Imran Khan on the 14th of August with the same intentions to over-throw the government, Dr. Tahir gave a call for a prayer ceremony for the people killed in the clashes with the Police.

Police tried to stop this prayer ceremony by laying siege to the entire area of Dr. Tahir's residence, Model Town, blocking the roads with empty shipping containers and barber wires, Police is trying to stop people approaching the venue and people who are trying to leave the area. The violence erupted in other parts of the province as the Police blocked all the roads linking cities with the highway. 2 more people were reported to be killed in Bhakkar today, as Police opened fire, several injured and a large number of people arrested by the Police. There is no need for killing the people or using the Police force with orders to open fire in the first place.

The whole country is going through a political turm-oil as the corrupt government, accused of election rigging on a large scale, refuses an inquiry into the accusations of fraudulent elections of 2013. PTI, party which has suffered the most due to this alleged rigging, has called in for a Freedom March rally which aims at getting rid from the government on the 14th August, country's independence day from the British empire. Yet again Police force has been used to cope up with PTI's rally as well, arresting political workers, restricting the sales of gasoline, blocking the roads and Police Terrorism is on the rise in Pakistan.
