Film Screening and Discussion of "American Promise"

Thu, Jan 30, 2014 6pm to 8pm
Pierson Auditorium in the Atterbury Student Success Center at UMKC · Cost: FREE

The University of Missouri-Kansas City’s Black Studies Program, the School of Education’s Urban Education Research Center and KCPT will host a screening of and community conversation about the documentary “American Promise.”

This free open to the public event will take place between 6-8 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 30 at Pierson Auditorium in the Atterbury Student Success Center.

In the documentary, Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson, middle-class African-American parents in Brooklyn, New York, documented their son, Idris, and his best friend Seun’s 13 -year journey through Manhattan’s Dalton School, one of the most prestigious private schools in the country.  This provocative, intimate documentary presents complicated truths about America’s struggle to come of age on issues of race, class and opportunity.

After viewing clips from the film, we’ll examine the roles that parents, teachers and members of the larger community play in shaping the identities of our nation’s black boys.  Contact The Urban Education Research Center [email protected] for more information.
