Day-Long Event Will Feature

Author-Journalist Bill McKibben

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Globally renowned water conservationist Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and environmental author Bill McKibben will join regional leaders this fall for the Midwest’s first partially-solar-powered Concert for the Climate.

Music will link together workshops, Kennedy’s keynote speech, and McKibben’s featured presentation at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers at Kaw Point Riverfront Park on Saturday, September 28, 2013. The event will last from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Among area leaders participating in the event are Kansas City, Kan., Mayor and Combined Government CEO Mark R. Holland. Opening ceremony will include a Native American blessing and Unified Government Mayor Mark Holland; as well as experts from the Mid-America Regional Council; the City of Kansas City, Missouri, and local industry leaders.

The event will include numerous entertaining and educational activities and workshops for the whole family including a special area just for kids. Electric and CNG vehicles will be on display as well as the Planet Earth Balloon – the only hot air balloon of its kind with a digital photo-image of the Earth. Topics will include energy-related demonstrations of solar and photovoltaic systems, residential and commercial energy economics, as well as habitat, river protection and restoration programs, land and agro-ecology, and weather patterns, etc., from local and regional experts. At the Home Performance Pavilion, event attendees will receive their own Clipboard Energy Checklist for conducting a practical, home-based, mini-energy assessment with experts on hand to answer questions.

Kennedy, a resolute defender of the environment who has inspired organizations around the globe, is a leader in sustainable development, and is a leading lawyer with several environmental and water-conservation and protection organizations – particularly of importance in Missouri and Kansas. Kennedy will share his views on energy issues and water and land conservation concerns. McKibben, named by Time Magazine as “the planet’s best green journalist”, will discuss issues of weather and climate and how they progressively will affect life, agriculture and agribusiness in the Midwest.

In the weeks leading up to the Concert event, a special project of Heartland Renewable Energy Society (HRES), event business partners from the Kansas City Chapter of Efficiency First, will donate materials and labor  for a “Seal the Envelope” text-to-win contest valued at $10,000.
