Two Percent of Animals Returned from Mega Adoption Event

INDIANAPOLIS - Organizers with the Indy Mega Adoption Eventsaid people have returned eight dogs and seven cats, which is a roughly 2 percent return rate, Call 6 Investigator Kara Kenney reported.

More than 700 animals were adopted at the event, held at the Indiana State Fairgrounds last month.

Several people have contacted RTV6 with concerns people were returning animals to the city shelter in large numbers, and critics say that adopting in one day can lead to less-qualified pet owners.

"We understand that some folks were asking why Indianapolis Animal Care and Control seems to be full and intakes are up," said organizer Megan Bennett. "These are not related to the event but are rather the usual sad summer influx."

FACE Clinic Event Coordinator Janet Mellinger told Kenney last month an average return rate is roughly 7 percent.

Bennett said it’s “outstanding” to come in below the average return rate.

City officials and animal advocates tried the Indy Mega Adoption Event as a brand-new approach to curb the killing of cats and dogs across Indianapolis

At the city shelter, 5,000 dogs and cats are killed each year and many of those animals are perfectly adoptable.

It’s a symptom of Indy’s animal overpopulation problem and the lack of space and resources of area shelters.

Organizers are already planning another Indy Mega Adoption Event for October.
