The Great Chicago Buildout - A Community Hackathon

The Great Chicago Buildout is a 2 day assembly of citizens who want to take action to build a better city. Just as the World’s Fair helped define Chicago 100 years ago, we hope the GCB can be the first step towards empowering individuals to make positive changes in our community.

Our mission is to form teams to immediately work on collaborative projects. The purpose of the GCB is to identify community needs and to immediately take action by creating the resources and plans necessary for long-term solutions. We hope for creative solutions that use the resources we have available. We need every type of skill set; everyone’s help will be welcomed and appreciated.

And then on Saturday night, we party.

In this vein, have been working on a number of projects that are intended to help communities organize and communicate.

Our Organizational Map of Chicago is one example of a project we are working on:

Got a project you want to get the community to work on? Got a community problem you think needs to be fixed? Share it on our hackdash, and we’ll add it to the weekend’s agenda! http://chiaspire.hackdash.org/

The tentative schedule is:

Fun starts at 6 pm on Friday with a Potluck. Bring your ideas, your energy and your favorite dish. At around 7 pm, we’ll have a brief orientation. Then people can step up to the mic and talk about what probems or projects they would like to work on. After that, we’ll let everyone mingle and form teams around the projects they feel most drawn to. At 9, we’ll reconvene to see where everyone is and MK will remain open until midnight for people to work.

On Saturday, MK will open around 8 am so people can come in and work, but our first official event won’t be until noon. We’ll serve lunch, have everyone check-in and work from there. We’ll work until 8 pm, where we will come together again to discuss the future of our projects. Party will start at 9.

This will be a fun and engaging 2 day event!
