Having worked in the Mineral Exploration Industry for many years, living in and exploring several countries around the globe, I have first hand knowledge of the destructive impact the mining and drilling industries have had on the indigenous peoples of the world. I cannot remain silent as I watch my native brothers and sisters in this country struggle against a looming return to the failed policies of Tribal Land Dispossession that have had a devastating and lasting impact upon so many Tribal Nations over the last two centuries. All in the name of Mineral Wealth and Greed.
My own ancestors walked The Trail Where They Cried so many years ago, the first of many ensuing government land grabs fueled by the lust for wealth and prosperity. Whose prosperity? Not the people whose very spirit lay in the land they were forced to leave behind.
The Bears Ears National Monument proposal is a bold and inspired plan to protect 1.8 million acres of Ancestral Native American homeland, a landscape of carved canyons, dramatic mesas and arches, located in South Eastern Utah.
