Owners of Portugal is a documentary about one hundred years of economic power. The film portrays the State protection to families who dominated the country's economy, its strategies for keeping the power and wealth accumulation. Mello, Champalimaud, Espírito Santo - the big families intersect by marriage and integrate by finance. Threatened by the end of the dictatorship, its power is restored under democracy, through privatization and promiscuity with political power. New economic groups - Amorim, Sonae, Jerónimo Martins - affirm themselves on the same basis.
As the crisis unravels all the limits of Portuguese economic development model, this film presents the actors and the great choices that brought us here. This documentary was produced for public television RTP 2 by the Institute of Contemporary History and edited by Edgar Feldman. It was broadcasted by RTP2 on the 25 Abril, 2012. Since that day it is available at donosdeportugal.net. In the first two weeks, the film had more than 120.000 online views (on Vimeo and private publications on Youtube).
The Owners of Portugal is based in a book of the same name, by Jorge Costa, Cecília Honório, Luís Fazenda, Francisco Louçã e Fernando Rosas, printed in 2010 by Edições Afrontamento. It sold more than 12.000 copies.
