Deadly Monopolies: Medical Ethicist Harriet Washington on How Firms are Taking Over Life Itself

Harriet Washington, medical ethicist and author. Her new book is called Deadly Monopolies: The Shocking Corporate Takeover of Life Itself-And the Consequences for Your Health and Our Medical Future. She is also author of Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to the Present.

An interview with Harriet Washington discussing her more recent book which details her research into how corporations are monopolising control over life. It is focused particularly on pharmaceutical companies, gene tech & their increasing relationships with universities to patent life. Sometimes this is done in a sly manner such that patients are not aware cells have been taken from them & used for patents, or indigenous knowledge is stolen to patent cures based on plant medicines. She also speaks about the huge injustices, racism & classism in the medical industry. Very well explained & really worth watching.
