In 2004, in the lead-up to the Summer Olympics in Athens, the Greek government allowed the NSA to tap into it's telecommunication systems to uncover possible terrorist plots during the games. The equipment was supposed to be removed when the games were over, but it remained on and was used to monitor top Greek government officials.
