Comcast lobbyists are working the halls of Congress to pave the way for their big takeover of NBC. Unfortunately, the merger would mean more media consolidation and could be a serious threat to net neutrality.

When the same company owns both the production and distribution of information and entertainment, consumers historically recieve less diversity of programming and higher price gouging

The trade group American Cable Association recently released an economic analysis predicting Comcast’s proposed merger could result in $2.4 billion in extra costs to consumers.

The merger would also create the world's largest company that would have unprecedented control over the flow of information.  Market analysts have estimated that a combined Comcast/NBC would control one in every five hours of television viewing.

Tell your elected officials to stand up to Comcast’s campaign for media domination.

Economic globalization has led to a massive expansion in the scale and power of big business and banking. It has also worsened nearly every problem we face: fundamentalism and ethnic conflict; climate chaos and species extinction; financial instability and unemployment. There are personal costs too. For the majority of people on the planet life is becoming increasingly stressful. We have less...

A documentary about the Occupy Wall Street , hacktivism, and the hackers trying to build a distributed network for the Occupy movement and beyond. You’re on the Internet. What does that mean? Most likely, it means one of a handful of telecommunications providers is middlemanning your information from Point A to Point B. Fire off an email or a tweet, broadcast a livestream or upload...
Everything you ever wanted to know about the 9/11 conspiracy theory in under 5 minutes. TRANSCRIPT: On the morning of September 11, 2001, 19 men armed with boxcutters directed by a man on dialysis in a cave fortress halfway around the world using a satellite phone and a laptop directed the most sophisticated penetration of the most heavily-defended airspace in the world, overpowering the...
PETA purchased ad spot airtime on NBC during the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, however the network rejected PETA’s ad because the “commercial does not meet NBC Universal standards.” I guess they found PETA’s take on Thanksgiving a little disturbing.
A short film exploring the impact of media consolidation on news content and how this affects youth, both as viewers and media makers. In 1983, 50 corporations controlled the vast majority of all news media in the U.S. At the time, Ben Bagdikian was called "alarmist" for pointing this out in his book, The Media Monopoly. In his 4th edition, published in 1992, he wrote "in the U.S., fewer than...
Media junk food is mind pollution. As waves of erratic, mindless info-toxins increasingly lay siege to a battered mental landscape, our mental pores become clogged, cluttering our capacity to think and to feel empathy. And so we find today that Junk Media is to our mental health, in the very real sense, what Junk Food is to our physical health. Our Cultural Commons has been stolen from us...
On Dec. 18, the FCC voted 3-2 to remove an important protection for diverse voices in our media. Chairman Kevin Martin pushed through the decision, which will allow big media firms to combine both a newspaper and TV or radio stations in the same market, despite overwhelming opposition from the public and elected officials across the political spectrum. Congress may act to overturn the FCC's...
Free Press supporters caught Comcast stacking a FCC hearing with paid (and apparently sleepy) seat-fillers so that the public couldn't get in. Don't let Comcast block Internet access like it blocks public debate. Speak out and protect everyone's right to connect. (Doesn't this sound remarkably similar to the tactic used by Pro-Holcomb investors to block the public from speaking out against the...
Kevin Martin, Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, has been keeping a secret from the American people. He wants to push through plans to remove decades-old media ownership protections. And he's trying to do it without public scrutiny. Senators Byron Dorgan and Trent Lott have introduced groundbreaking bipartisan legislation that would hold the FCC accountable and put the people...
