Who We Are

Films For Action uses the power of film to raise awareness of important social, environmental, and media-related issues not covered by the mainstream news. Our goal is to provide citizens with the information and perspectives essential to creating a more just, sustainable, and democratic society.

What We Do

On the ground, we're working to create alternative media channels that will inform, connect, and inspire action at a community level.

Our Lawrence, KS chapter screens documentaries at Liberty Hall and other venues regularly throughout the year. With most films we launch an accompanying educational and action-oriented campaign to address the issues presented by the films.

All the films we buy we make available for people to borrow from us for free, either to watch themselves or to screen in their own neighborhoods (See our Lending Library).

Our Lawrence website ( offers several tools to connect and inform people locally, including:

  • A calendar of events, detailing all of the progressive/radical activist events happening in the Lawrence area at any given time. A daily snapshot of the week's events is displayed prominently on the homepage, allowing awareness of our events to reach hundreds and eventually thousands of more people.
  • A directory of local activist groups, united by our common vision for a better future, detailing who they are, what they do, and how those interested can get involved. Each page features associated resources, a bulletin board for group members to stay current on recent updates, and a handy subscription form to sign up for the group's email Newsletter or list-serve.
  • Profile pages for all of the activist members in the community, detailing their interests, skill-share resources, and other information tailored to help foster stronger, real-world community development and support networks.
  • A blog featuring local news and articles written and contributed by local bloggers in the spirit of democratic, participatory journalism.
  • Film screening tool-kits for twenty of the best documentaries we've previously screened, including flyer templates with original artwork, sample press releases, and sample action guides.
Get Involved

Join the Community
Become a member of Films For Action and network with other positive individuals working to change the world. By becoming a member you'll be able to leave comments on site content, befriend and message members, create a personal profile, vote up or down on content to keep the quality of the site high, and contribute excellent content to our demcratic media commons.

Add Content
We want Films For Action to be the definitive place to watch socially-conscious films online. If you come across a great video that hasn't been added yet, we encourage you to add it! We're looking for quality over quantity, so only add the very best of the best, and filter out the rest.

You can also add independent news, original articles written by you, and actions, as well as local Lawrence events or groups. Check out our F.A.Q. and Guide to Adding Content for more.

Join Our Street Team
Help us get the word out about the project by handing out flyers to people in Lawrence. Street team promotion involves printing up our event and general promotion flyers and distributing them around town. There are two main circuits: Downtown and on the KU campus. Wed' also like to expand to Haskell. On a case by case basis we also try to promote at like-minded events, shopping centers, big outdoor events, or any other high-traffic areas where you can stand and hand out lots of flyers in a short amount of time Email or call us to volunteer. This is one of the best ways you can help the project grow.

Coordinate or help organize a Film Screening
If you'd like to help us with our Liberty Hall events, we'd love for you to join us. We'd also like to see regular film screenings at other venues, including the Library, churches, and elsewhere. So we have the potential to create multiple film screening "teams" that organize around a specific venue. Our vision is to have many screenings occuring all over Lawrence. Check out our guide to hosting film screenings for more.

Help/ Graphic Designers
Want to put your graphic design skills to work on some new flyer designs? We'd love to have your help developing new promotional materials for the website. Since our city chapters run on a tight budget, black & white quarter-page flyers or full-page posters printed on yellow paper are our go-to medium for getting the word out on the streets. We also occasionally print up full-color flyers if the design is especially exceptional. Last, we're always working on new online graphics that fit within the standard ad sizes (300x250px, 125x125, 728x90 etc). You can email your concept ideas or drafts to Get in touch to brainstorm ideas.

Help/ Film Makers
We're looking for people with film/editing/story-board experience that would be interested in shooting/editing/developing a 30 second to 3 minute PSA to promote the Films For Action website online. There are so many angles to tackle this creatively, we're hoping to create several short videos, each using a different theme. For now though, we'd like to get one! Get in touch with us to hear our current ideas and to bounce off any ideas you have. If you want to make a rough video sketch to get your idea across that would be excellent. Your help on this will be greatly appreciated!

Maintain our MySpace
Like to use MySpace? We're looking for someone to keep an active presence on our MySpace page. Activities would include accepting new friends, making bulletin posts of new videos, adding an occastional blog with updates on the website or new city chapters, and anything else you can think of create an engaging experience for people who visit our page.

Become an FFA Blogger
Each of our City Chapters hosts a blog that features articles, op-eds and news contributed by local writers in the spirit of democratic, participatory journalism. Our Chapter blogs aim to focus on local issues and events, providing progressive local coverage of important issues, which are often under-represented by established media. If you'd like to become a regular blogger for your local chapter, submit one or two sample writings to them for consideration. If you don't write that frequently, you can always send in your article as a guest submission. If you already write content for an existing blog or website, we'd love to have your content sydnicated on our own. Or, if you know of a blogger in your city that does good work, send them our way.

Our work is sustained by generous donations from people like you. Large or small, your support is greatly appreciated. Donate here.
