4 Mile March - Indianapolis: #ReclaimTheDream
Jan 8, 2015

We ask that you join us (and 25+ cities across the U.S) for the peaceful symbolic 4 Mile March on Monday January 19th at 4:30 pm. It's a movement, not just another protest--it's a call to ACTION! Together we will spread awareness about police violence, demand accountability from law enforcement, and honor the lives of those who have fallen victim to this national epidemic. It's time to #ReclaimTheDream of Martin Luther King Jr. that has yet to be realized! Dr. King's memory has been largely sanitized in popular American culture, with some of his most revolutionary thoughts and words all but wiped from the pages of popular history. At this historic moment, when a movement is raging in our streets, we believe it is time to reclaim MLK's legacy, and remind the world that his vision was larger than what they've been told to imagine, and that it remains unfulfilled. On 1/19, join us at 4:30 pm for a march that will begin at the Soldiers and Sailors Monument. We will march 0.4 miles from 1 Monument Circle to the Indiana State Capitol at 200 West Washington, once there we will observe 4 minutes of silence and then march 0.4 miles back the monument where we will hold another peaceful action. What's up with the 4's? 4 is of the number of minutes Tamir Rice lay without first aid after being fatally wounded, It is the number of hours that Micheal Brown lay in the street after being fatally shot. We ask that those who attend join in lifting up their words and vision in a peaceful manner, and that attendees refrain from using their own sound amplification devices during the event. Depending on interest/participation, a few more activities/gathering starting the weekend of January 15, 2014 might be planned leading up to the culminating activity (the march.) They would be: - 1/15: Day of Resistance (Possible sign making gathering) -1/18: Day of Reliance (Possible group attendance of the movie Selma) - 1/19: Day of Action: March If you are part of a group planning a daytime solidarity action on January 19th, please feel free to reach out to discuss your plans, and to post your event info on this page. We are grateful for community contributions, but only actions and events keeping with the tone and theme of this event will be promoted on this event page. If you would like to help get involved, volunteer or add your group or organization's name to this event please reach out! Invite your family, friends, colleagues!
