25 min - Peak Moment TV - 1604 Views
In his book, The Long Descent, John Michael Greer observes that our culture has two primary stories: “Infinite Progress” or “Catastrophe”. On the contrary, he sees history as cyclic: civilizations rise and fall. Like others, ours is exhausting its resource base. Cheap energy is over. Decline is here, but the descent will be a long one. It’s too late to maintain the status quo by swapping energy sources. How to deal with this predicament? He lays out practical ideas, possibilities, and potentials, including reconnecting with natural and human capacities pushed aside by industrial life.

I find it disturbing that Greer, for all his awareness and perception, seems, at least in his public speaking and writing, unable or unwilling to recognize the possibility that humanity in general will go right on denying reality as civilization crumbles around it. What is to prevent predicament turning into catastrophe?

There is another "Peak" we are suffering This is the point where the big money of the world has transitioned from the American Worker, as an expensive and unreliable resource, to the 85 cent an hour Chinese peasant woman, a self-regenerating and unending , cheap and reliable source of labor - This change coming at the same time as peak oil has significance. Is nuclear energy the next great folly for the Americans? Will they discount the truly renewable, perpetual Solar, Wind, Wave, Tidal, Hydro, and Geothermal Energy sources for the final poison of nuclear wastes in their short term desperation? Can America become a responsible citizen in the world and control breeding at home? The Chinese have strict "Breeding" rules but Americans breed indiscriminately and sometimes for entertainment! Too much stimulation from Hollywood? Too much hormones in the meat supply? a sick, degenerate faction of the general population? lack of laws and enforcement of existing laws? Religious notions destroying the nation? Why do we have enough nuclear warheads to destroy the world 20 times over, and not enough Solar, Wind, Wave,Tidal, Hydro and Geothermal power to survive an oil shortage unscathed? Are we that afraid of our neighbors? Are they really all that bad? Somehow I rather think we have been Shystered and Shylocked into this B.S. Can GMO's help the starving urban masses in this (GRD) great republican depression, or will we have Anarchy in the city streets when the "shit hits the fan" Can Obama survive the catastrophic mess Bush has left him, or will he run, holding his temples and screaming gibberish by the end of his first term?
